Demo and live tracks from Ian Foster to open the show. Then some folk with a bluegrass flavour from The Strangeboys. Some songs from Jenn Grant’s new CD Echoes.
Then an interview I taped 30 minutes before the show started with Melissa DiMarco. East coast connection that night as on her show ‘Out There’ that night she traveled to Nova Scotia and met up with Bubbles of the Trailer Park Boys. We chatted for about 12 minutes.
At the end of the hour, Melissa’s song request. For David Baxter with his title track, ‘Day and Age’. He’s a musician from Toronto who contributes to the Degrassi soundtrack. A show Melissa will be working on as they start shooting soon.
Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers who were playing Kingston that following Tuesday.
Some sets of music from The Fables, Ron Hynes and Meghan Blanchard.
End the show with 3 live songs. Allison Crowe’s cover of ‘Who Will Save Your Soul’. Greg Keelor and Cuff The Duke with ‘Palace of Gold’. End with Jessica Rhaye, ‘Holding Out’. Jessica has a new CD that’s coming out soon which I’ll be getting my hands on.
Here is Melissa’s email address that she gave out during the show, fans of her show can contact it here. And the many places the show is online. Website, YouTube, MySpace and Facebook.
Lot of places online to follow the show, as many things as me. I don’t have a YouTube channel, but I’m on Twitter. Maybe that’s next up for them. 🙂
Since I was running on little sleep last night I mixed up the start times. The new Out There episode was at 10pm, then the episode from the previous week was 10:30pm. Oops. But at least the episode in Nova Scotia is on again next week if my mistake caused you to miss it.
Thanks to Melissa for the interview.
Time to check out Bulls-Celtics Game 7, hopefully a close game.
Few computer/internet problems today but the shows are finally up.
Lots of different artists in the first hour. Hey Rosetta, David Baxter, The Lever Pulled, Remedy, Francis Arsenault and Christine Crawford.
Start off with a DAWG FM/CRTC update. Then back to music for the rest of the show.
Neil Dobson and the Fabulous Hats, Faded Blue, The Strangeboys and Great Big Sea.
If you heard the first hour you know I mentioned winning a mug from Out There with Melissa Dimarco. Last night’s new episode was built around the “swag bag” they give out to actors who do interviews with them during the film festival. So I’m having a drink out of the mug and I see the mug itself on the show. Good timing. LOL.
As for the DAWG FM update, here is the update from the Facebook group I read part of on air last night.
The re-hearing into our DAWG 101.9FM was adjourned yesterday until June 12th 2009. At which time the Commission will hear evidence about the feasibility of the use of 94.5 FM in the Ottawa market.
What does that mean? Let me give you the short history. We were awarded the licence on August 26th 2008, after an exhaustive process. The Decision included our ALL BLUES licence on 101.9FM and a licence to Astral Media for an ADULT CONTEMPORARY licence on 99.7.
An appeal was launched by a Franco-Ontario group that suggested that they should have been licenced. The appeal was granted by Cabinet and the decision was referred back to the CRTC.
We took a proactive, positive approach to this, at great expense, we found another frequency on which, the CRTC could licence another French Language station if it desired to do so. That frequency is 94.5FM.
The CRTC is going to study that frequency to see if it can be used and all of the applicants will get a chance to make comments at the new hearing on June 12.
So we think this is very positive for the Blues. We had the best engineers in Canada find this frequency, further we had it verified by two more engineers, lastly two of the other applicants said it would work….so we know it works period.
The sticky point here is that Astral Media needs to consent to the use of the 94.5 frequency or use it themselves instead of 99.7.
Bob Walsh, Quebec Blues Legend, Alexandre Petit, from Viree Blues Boreale and Ottawa City Councillor Eli El-Chantiry came to the hearing to address the CRTC and were awesome in support of our application, our thanks to them and to everyone – over 3000 people that have supported DAWG FM.
Funny that a guy I read on a radio news message board seems to have guessed this ahead of time. User named Dan said this 3 weeks ago.
“My guess is the CRTC will re-grant those licenses to Astral and Frank Torres, plus give the go-ahead to the Gatineau Community Station (I assume it was this group that launched the initial complaint). That way everyone is happy.”
Hmmm. Sounds like that’s what’s happening in Ottawa doesn’t it? Does show you that sometimes people on an internet message boards really do have inside information. 🙂
April has snuck up on me. Hope everyone is having a nice weekend. Another gloomy day here in Kingston. Looks like winter is going to hit this area one more time. Possible rain/snow mix overnight and a chance of it from Mon-Wed. But I’ll believe it when I see it.
I’ll open the show with Mark Frost’s song ‘Fall Into the Ocean’ about the helicopter crash. Sure many people reading this already listened to it after I put up a link for it, but it’s good to let the radio listeners get to hear it.
Interview with Andrea Wittgens airs tonight. After the editing it runs 35 minutes since we covered a lot of topics. Divided it up into sections, as usual. So I’ll play her CD during the interview.
Andrea is the first Queen’s Alumni I’ve had on the show. She’s from Antigonish, Nova Scotia then came to Queen’s and took French and Music. She then moved to Seattle where she still resides. So we talked about that, then we talked about her music.
Tonight I have that an I’ll play her CD ‘In the Skyline’ in it’s entirety. I have some songs from a previous EP as well I think I’ll play.
Thanks to Brent Maclean for sending me the new CD by The Lever Pulled. I’ve played their music before but it’s nice to have a hard copy of it. Won’t have much time tonight so I’ll play some of it on next week’s show.
Another quick thanks to Kimberly Sinclair for sending me some new discs as well. Ryan Neilson, Remedy and Francis Arsenault. And a couple more on the way. Same story, next week. Kim is a fan of Andrea so I’m sure she won’t mind waiting a week. 🙂
As for TV tonight. March Madness for sports fans, I should get home to see the end of the 7pm tip off games. They’ll end around 9:30pm.
Which means I’ll take a break and watch Out There with Melissa DiMarco on CITY-TV at 10pm. Last week the episode on poker was fun. I thought an actor was playing an editor on the show. Found last night on a message board that he really is an editor who works on the show and plays poker. Who knew?
Basketball games go late into the night, past midnight. So if you’re a fan of Letterman or Craig Ferguson you’ll have to stay up later than usual. Craig’s a rerun, Dave was new last night but I missed it.
I’ll upload the radio show on Saturday. Might get it tonight but I’m not counting on it with the sports going late tonight. So the link will be up tomorrow.
That’s it for now. As a reminder for new readers, show starts 6pm EST tonight. 101.9FM in Kingston or http://www.cfrc.ca for the vast majority of readers outside of K-Town.
Opening up the show with 2 songs from Teresa Ennis’ live performance on CBC Radio last weekend during the ECMA weekend.
Then I’ll be talking about the ECMA’s and go over a few things at the top of the show. So then I can play the interview and music for the rest of the show.
Reminder tonight after the show you can watch the new season of Out There with Melissa DiMarco on CITY-TV at 10pm. Previous post gives all the station details.
Fergus interview went very well. Runs about 20 minutes. Talk about Tacks Beach, which is the best part of the interview. After the Herald interview I did with Toni Marie was printed I heard from some family members in Newfoundland. My Uncle Bob told me that Fergus’ wife grew up in Tacks Beach.
That was a small community in Newfoundland that was resettled in the 1970’s. My mother’s family was from Tacks Beach as well.
In fact my grandmother is still friends with Fergus’ mother in law and talks to her on the phone.
That part of the interview is only 2 minutes but it’s the best part. Big surprise for me when I heard. Then a surprise for Fergus too, since he knew Tacks Beach right away.
Small world. Type Tacks Beach into Google Maps. Then zoom out and you’ll see how small it is.
If you don’t know what “resettlement” was in Newfoundland here’s a short article. Try and imagine this happening today. Entire communities left abandoned.
Time for a post about Canadian Television for once. I guess the ECMA awards counts but that’s once a year. New season of a show I watch ‘Out There with Melissa Dimarco’ starts on Friday. New day, new time and new channel.
I won a contest the show had on Facebook to guess the start date. OK, I was the only entry but a win is a win people. 🙂
With some free swag coming my way, it’s only fair to help out in a small way and promote the show. It’s returning with new episodes this week.
The show is now on Friday Nights on CityTV across the country. 2 episodes back to back by the way. 10pm local, except for Winnipeg where it’s 9pm. Here are the times across the country, I put the Eastern time for those who might have the time shifted stations on satellite or digital cable. Or want to watch more than once. lol.
10pm EST Citytv Toronto
10pm EST, 9pm local on Citytv Winnipeg
12am EST, 10pm local on Citytv Calgary and Edmonton
1am EST, 10pm local on Citytv Vancouver
“Focusing on Melissa’s fun experiences with the stars as an entertainment journalist, this scripted dramedy brings viewers in for a behind-the-scenes look at the trials and tribulations of an entertainment journalist who at the end of the day, really gets the one-on-one interview.”
This week’s episodes, if the online TV guide is correct.
“The Only Life I Know” Howie Mandel; Brad Pitt.
“Mexico Fiesta Siesta” Melissa travels to Mexico; Antonio Banderas; Salma Hayek.
Melissa and the gang behind the show have a lot of online sources you can check out the show. Good to see a show reaching out to fans online.

Another group on Facebook mentions how they look for new music for the show. Thought it be a good link for any musicians who might be reading.
Out There With Melissa Dimarco – looking for music
As Music Supervisor for Out There With Melissa DiMarco (www.outtherewithmelissa.com) I currently write all the original music for Out There With Melissa DiMarco. We want to expand our music on the show. I am looking for some additional music/ artists to place on the show.
If you are a songwriter, band or music artist looking to get your music on to a national television show…
I am interested in hearing from you.
Music Supervisor, OutThere
I’ll mention the show on the radio as well, but good to give a heads up here as well.
One week I could tell the story of seeing her on Open Mike with Mike Bullard when I was living in Ottawa. Tom Green was the guest that followed her….. ended up being one of the craziest things ever on late night. The rare time where they had to stop the taping. That story will wait for another day. 🙂
