Weather co-operated so the Regatta is going on today. First up today a link to another blogger originally from Newfoundland. Nadine’s blog is called ‘Missing the Rock’.
“I am one of the many Newfoundlanders living and working away from The Rock, and I miss it dearly. Home is a constant image in my mind, even though I haven’t lived there in over 9 years.
There is something about the Island that seeps into your soul, and never allows you to truly leave. It makes life away difficult. Lonely. But, I, like so many others make the best of it. I married my best friend, I have a sweet little boy, and a job I enjoy (ok maybe enjoy is a bit of a strong word).
So in many ways I have been very lucky. This blog is for anyone out there who longs for home, and far flung family and friends. I tend to prefer more interactive elements of the internet- and so I encourge you to leave a comment, or two. Let’s have a conversation.”
Add that to your bookmarks or Blogreader. Great posts on there. Nadine is part of the NL Blogroll which I just found. Now here is a LOT of Newfoundland blogs. Too many to even start with a list.
Over to sports with The CIS Blog. CIS is the name for Canadian University Sports. Used to be called the CIAU but they changed that a few years ago. Bit of news from my Twitter account on there.
Matt Bisson sent me a message on Facebook that we are doing the preseason game on the radio. Which I didn’t know about so I passed it along on Twitter last night. Queen’s is traveling to Toronto for a game Monday, August 31st with a 7pm kickoff . In a way that’s a bit of Monday Night Football on CFRC.
Back to the CIS Blog, Neate Sager is one of the editors there. Former contributor to Offsides on CFRC. Or should the wording be, contributor to a “former” sports show on the station. Hmmm. Either way he also has the Out of Left Field blog as well.
Staying with Queen’s Football, one of its newest members is on Twitter and has a blog. Shomari Williams transfered from the University of Houston to Queen’s this year. Nice to see one of the Gaels online.
Would’ve linked to Shomari anyway, but he’s a fellow Washington Redskins fan. A good reason to put it up as quickly as I can. 🙂
Finally a friend from high school has started a blog. Found Mellowdee Krieger Cliffe on Facebook before my radio show started. She told me about a script for a film she was working on. 2 years later it’s getting closer to reality. I’ll grab a paragraph from her first blog post about it. Her blog is called ‘Mellowdee’s Mindclutter’.
“Part of the reason I decided to start this ‘public’ blog is because some friends n’ family have suggested that it might be a neat idea to record this period of our lives.
For those I haven’t told yet, our script has entered ‘development’ – the first phase towards making it into a film for theatrical release. So yeah, it might be fun to write about this whole process, because I honestly don’t know what to expect on this journey into film and writing.”
All right I think that’s it for today. Busy post for mid-week.
I worked all long weekend, so I have today off. Get to watch the Regatta coverage on NTV today. Hope the weather stays nice.
Too many different topics, so I pull out the ‘Potpourri’ title from Jeopardy for this post.
New CD in the mail so that will be on Friday Night. Some rock from Halifax with the band ‘Brite Vu’. And some more new stuff.
Haven’t decided when I’ll do the ‘official’ 2 year anniversary show. It was middle of May so it will air sometime this month. 🙂
Good luck to fellow blogger Bart Given and his family on the move to Vancouver.
Hasn’t the statute of limitations run out on the ‘glass desk’ joke? LOL. [For non-sports fans don’t worry it would take a while to explain it anyway.]
Jody started working in radio so really is a full circle going back. Good for Bart since it will be easier for him to baseball being on West Coast time. Jays game at 4pm for example.
Congrats to Chris Zelkovich on the scoop. Tyler had him as a guest on ‘Offsides’ last year so that always get him bonus points if you’re part of a CFRC show.
If everything goes according to plan Bart will be a guest on Offsides this Friday at 4pm EST on CFRC. So tune in then, or watch Out of Left Field for the interview once it’s posted.
Saw Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers concert last night with my Mom. Very good and a packed house at the Grand Theatre in Kingston. Leaving the concert we were behind a car who apparently drove from Belleville for the show.
Here is the website for the band, wrapping up the Ontario part of their tour this month. They mentioned recording songs for a new CD, so I’ll keep my eye out for that.
That’s it for now. Covered a lot. 🙂
Thanks to Gary Kelly for the comment on the Twitter blog post. He was wondering if Faye Grim was really Toni Marie. It is easy to fake people’s identity on Twitter, but it is her. 🙂
Another account to add to the list. Bart Given from the Inside The Majors blog is on Twitter. Right now he has two followers. So we’ll try to increase that. At least past 10.
Last week did show what happens online. Sometimes one post can start a snowball effect. My one post on Inside the Majors was read by Neate Sager on Out of Left Field. Neate posted about it, which then got picked up by some Jays sites. Now it’s spread to baseball message boards. Latest I found is someone from Toronto who works for Google posting about it on Twitter.
Of course a blog by someone with a lot of baseball knowledge would’ve been noticed anyway. But we’ll ignore that. 🙂
Friday night I’ll have the interview with Melanie Samson I did recently. Then I’ll finally have caught up with the interviews I taped over the last month. I’ll also be playing her CD during the show.
U.S. is out of the World Baseball Classic. And it’s hardly a story. After the game last night I go to ESPN.com. It’s not the main story, not even highlighted as a big story. It was the 4th one down on the side of the page. Even now it’s behind a story about A-Rod’s rehab on his hip. Jeez, there’s a sign how low on the totem pole the WBC is.
I joined Twitter on a whim last June. Friend here in Kingston, Tommy Vallier, told me he was on it. He had good things to say about it. And a few podcasters I interviewed during Podcasters Across Borders was on it. So I thought, why not?
I’ve known it has grown a crazy amount in the last year. But not exactly how much till listening to the Net@Night podcast with Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur.
How about this “unique visitors to Twitter increased 1,382 percent year-over-year, from 475,000 unique visitors in February 2008 to seven million in February 2009.”
Damn, that’s a big jump. And that growth is the reason for that new horrible Facebook layout. They’re trying to copy Twitter and just annoying everyone.
I started finding musicians on there too last year which has helped me find stuff for the show. The one thing good about it, is unlike Facebook you don’t have to sign up to read someone’s account. So with the news about the growth I thought I’d go through some people I follow. Most with an East Coast connection, well not the first two.
David Lynch director of Twin Peaks, Blue Velvet and Mullholland Drive. He gives people a daily weather forecast 5 days a week from L.A. On his account there and video version of it on his website.
All those great, strange movies and there he is just saying what the weather is like. I check it everyday just because I can’t believe he does it 5 days a week. Dedication.
Erica Ehm. Remember when MuchMusic was cool, and had music videos, and was a channel you would watch, and it didn’t totally suck? Ya, it’s been a long time. But you can read updates from Erica Ehm and remember the good ole days. lol.
Teresa Ennis just joined up recently, I made fun of her Habs losing to the Leafs a few minutes ago. 5-2 at home to Toronto? At least people in Montreal should take solace in that it looks like there won’t be any need to RIOT like they did last spring. That’s right, a low blow but deserved when you trash the city after a 1st round victory.
Recently played on the show, found this after she appeared on Radio ECMA.
Brent from The Lever Pulled, a recent addition who in the last month has already threatened to end his Twitter account. LOL. So follow it while you still can. 🙂
Gary Kelly’s account where you can find a tonne of accounts from Newfoundland. Like mine.
Melanie Samson, my interview with her airs next Friday.
Neate Sager’s blog Out Of Left Field. Does sometimes have other people contribute to the account too, if I remember correctly.
Sean from Great Big Sea. Lots of updates from the road.
Latest friend of mine to join on a whim. You’re thinking, “Faye Grim? Who is that?” You would know her by her real name, Toni Marie Wiseman. Yes, Toni who interviewed me for the Newfoundland Herald. That’s for those not from Newfoundland. If you’re from the province you know who she is. 🙂
That username is taken from a movie she likes. An obscure movie I had never heard of either.
She told me it was movie she loved but not many people do. Movie database rates it 6.6 out of 10. One comment is that it was the worst movie they’ve ever seen. ha ha.
Toni has a great sense of humour. Which you only catch a glimpse of on the news. Just look at this on her Twitter account.
Location: In your living room.
Bio: Da girl what does da news.
And we’re both big Monty Python fans, to show you our sense of humour. Yes, we are the type of people who can quote from the movies. Off the top of my head without any Google help.
“I mean if I went around saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me they’d have me put away.”
Ahhh, Holy Grail. That reminds me, John Cleese is on too.
Oh and my account. But after the Minister of Silly Walks that’s a step down. 🙂
Canadian Blog Awards are going on, if you can vote for ‘Out of Left Field’ here. Writer Neate Sager is a friend of CFRC Sports and an alumni. Let’s see if we can get that blog into Round 2.
