Olympic-esque Blog Day 10

Didn’t watch one second of the Canada-US game on Sunday. Getting up early to watch a game where both teams automatically get in the playoffs? Nah. Plus not a fan of pros in the Olympics so waking up 3 or 4 hours early wasn’t going to happen. My Mom has watched a lot of the Olympics, and she didn’t watch either. Said she watched Desperate Houswives, Women’s Curling and didn’t even see the hockey score till Monday morning.  Not everyone in the country watched.

Bad results continued. Ski cross, bobsled, hockey. Did get a Silver in speed skating but the World Champion faltered and didn’t medal. Canadians patience is running out. CTV is not helping people’s expectations with graphics and promos like this for Monday: “Golden Opportunity: Virtue and Moir Go for Gold” Have they learned nothing so far? At this point aim for any medal.

The late Women’s Curling match was great. Although I’m sure you were asleep. Canada-China was close with the Chinese winning in 11 ends. Canada still first as it was only their first loss. Don’t file that under “bad results”. Does show how good the new Red Machine has come in Curling though. Betting Chinese sports officials looked at sports they can become competitive quickly in. Women’s Curling isn’t as deep as say downhill skiing. With over a billion people that’s a deep talent pool. The Chinese women are the defending World Champs who also live and train in Canada during the season. Curling is also their full time job as the government pays them just to do that. That’s an edge that is hard to beat.

Was going to take a day off from making fun of Olympic Morning but today they took the cake. In the first 30 minutes they had two people from MTV Canada on. Unbelievably they talked about the Australian commentator who got in trouble for homophobic comments during men`s figure skating. Couldn’t believe that since Canadian broadcaster RDS is in trouble for the exact same thing.

“Gay rights group to launch complaint over ‘homophobic’ comments by RDS analysts”

Among the quotes was ‘We should make him (Weir) pass a gender test at this point’. Classy. And a lot of gall for CTV to point out the Australians doing it but not mention RDS at all.  Any thought of CTV getting better as they went along was thrown out the window around 6:20am.  Even discussed a Facebook group about the Aussie getting in trouble called ‘Eddie McGuire is ruining the 2010 Winter Olympics coverage’.  It would be like making fun of another country’s broadcaster doing body shots during a taped piece.  Oh right, MuchMusic did that for CTV.  Almost forgot.

CFRC alumni Neate Sager with a couple of articles, you can find more on the Yahoo Sports blog. William Houston is also writing for them. Neate also not a huge fan of CTV’s coverage.  I do remember CBC’s “on the cheap” attempt in Italy.  Where Brian Williams was hosting from Toronto.  Not their brightest moment.

Back tomorrow morning.  Try and find some music links from all the East Coast artists that are playing in Vancouver.
